Breaking The Cycle Of Filth
Are you struggling with some negative habits? Each time these habits manifest, you feel guilty, dirty and unworthy? Have you done all you can or know best to do, yet find yourself in the same circle of filth over and again? Worry no more. Help is here for you.
Maybe you’ve sought help from some brethren or friends you felt could help at a time but their response was not helpful. Some probably have expressed great discontentment and casted aspersions that made you keep to yourself and seek God’s help directly. Know one thing for sure, God can and will help you.
They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed – Psalms 34:5
God love you so dearly and knows exactly how you feel. For we do not have a High Priest who is unable to understand and sympathize and have a shared feeling with our weaknesses and infirmities and liability to the assaults of temptation, but One who has been tempted in every aspect as we are, yet without sinning – Heb. 4:15 (AMP).
Know for sure that in spite of your weaknesses or ordeal, you’re not condemned by God. The narrative in the book of John chapter 8 with special reference to verse 11 lend credence to this. “And Jesus said unto her, neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.” When you slip; acknowledge you’ve sinned, confess unto God and forsake (Prov. 28:13).
The following steps stated below though not exhaustive can be of help.
Take deliberate steps and refuse to be slave to sin (Rom. 6:12-13). Breaking the circle of filth is a deliberate decision. Be determined to overcome and get rid of these habits by completely replacing them with better ones. Jesus said, GO AND SIN NO MORE. However, not by your strength but by the strength of the Holy Spirit – Zech. 4:6.
Prayer and fasting
The reason why the urges are overwhelming you is because you are fighting it alone, ask God for help. You can ask God for help by giving yourself relentlessly to prayer and fasting. This has a great a way to help get rid of unnecessary habit. This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting – Mark 9:29.
The prayer does not need to be so sophisticated. Make it simple but pray it in faith. Also bear in mind that your prayers should not focus solely on the bad habits but that God should help you to become more of who He has created you to be.
Let go of the past and MOVE ON with God. Rest on the finished work of Christ and know that who the Son of God has set free is free indeed – John 8:36. Life is too short to relive ugly moments and wallow in self-pity or condemnation. There may those times you relapse. In those moments love yourself and declare this will come to pass.
Guide your heart with all diligence
Study the word of God continually, keep declaring your liberty when such urge arises. Engage your mind positively by thinking on edifying things (Phil. 4:8; Prov. 4:23). Avoid been idle because an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. Stay busy doing relevant things so as to avoid evil thoughts that could lead to evil.
Be mindful of what you hear and see
Avoid exposing yourself to words, pictures or movies that feed your wrong habits.
Choose your company carefully
Birds of a feather flock together. Daniel chose friends that aligned with his stance on not defiling himself. Restructure and filter your circle of friends.
You can break the circle of filth. Yes, you can!
