The Importance of Self-Reliance

A week ago, I promised to make a follow-up post on the importance of self-reliance. Today, I am exactly going to do just that.

I have lived a good part of my life depending on others. I ask for my friends’ and family’s opinions and advice if I need help with a problem. What was the outcome? Over-reliance on others decreased my efficiency with very few exceptions. Expecting others to do the thinking for me stopped me from learning and innovating.

More recently, I have become very self-reliant. This sometimes, lead me to put high levels of pressure and stress on myself. It has ultimately helped me become the independent person I am today. Which is why I think self-reliance is key to success in life.

Some benefits has accrued to me for being self-reliant. Let me share some with you.

I am better at problem solving

Prior to now, when I feel overpowered and upset by issues, I stress myself into a spot where I can’t think straight. Presently, I look for ways to have tasks, responsibilities and challenges resolved. I do this without unduly crutching on those who make up my support system.

I have learnt to manage money more effectively

Against the background of always reaching out to either my parents, siblings, or friends to help me finance some projects, I have learnt to make do with the little I have to achieve much. The lesson here is avoiding excessive debt. I have incurred necessary debt but only after careful, thoughtful prayer and after obtaining the best possible advice. Much more, I have matured into creating and sticking to a reasonable budget that includes fulfilling my financial obligations to my parents, local church and a savings account. This has enabled me do much to create peace in my everyday life.

Knowledge acquisition

Sometimes the solution to some things I always needed help for was to get more education. This can be formal training in an academic set up or self-initiated. Overtime, I have become better and efficient by learning all I can about the industry I am in – education, agriculture and blogging, the world around me, and the best ways to thrive.

Integrity

Difficult times have made me sometimes to question or even compromise my values. Self-reliance have helped me take a firm position that no amount of money is worth lowering my standards for. All I do is to put my trust in God (Prov. 3:18). Trusting God is my greatest way of finding rest in turbulent situations. I exercise my faith in the Lord and Him alone. For this, I am experiencing more joy and peace in all areas.

Confidence

The more I succeed and thrive independently, the more I realize I am capable of achieving a lot beyond my wildest imagination. Exuding confidence have drawn some attention to me, helped me make new friends and connections, and is an important trait of the best leaders in history. Self-reliance creates the capacity to lead others.

Much more, confidence is created through success. I am not talking about success in the usual manner rather I am talking about success through achievement. I am talking about success in coping with your own emotions, especially the core fear of separation. Each time you stand up for yourself and risk rejection, your ability to be independent grows. Self-reliance grows your confidence and belief in yourself.

Family denial presents the strongest test of your independence and self-reliance. On some unfortunate occasions, you need to stand up for what you believe in, regardless of the potential for rejection and family ridicule. This conflict with the family creates the greatest challenge to independence and confidence. Face the challenge and your confidence grows. Avoid the challenge and you swallow emotions that poison your self-worth.

Final thoughts…

As I bring this piece to a close, I’d like you to know that to become self-reliant requires a conscious effort of replacing an “I need help” attitude with an “I can do it myself” attitude. And the best part of becoming self-reliant is that it rewards you along the way. As you achieve even a small portion of it, you feel really good about yourself.

Self-reliance is a call for you to think outside the box, break the norm, and get busy doing something. Be unique, go the extra mile.

A blessed day is all I ask God to give you.

PS
Kindly share your thoughts with me in the comment section on the lessons you’ve learnt in your journey to self-reliance. I’d like to hear from you.
