Inspiration for a Balanced & Successful Life
No Course of Study is Irrelevant

I have had opportunities to interface with children from different backgrounds as a teacher for the past 17 years. My experience has been fulfilling. I have learnt and still learning from these children.

In the month of August, I was privileged to be part of a team of teachers saddled with the responsibility to organize a 2-week intensive holiday bible school in my local assembly. This exposed me to new frontiers with respect to rearing children. Worthy of note was how receptive these children were to the teachings and a good number made decision to follow the path of righteousness.

In one of the sessions, I facilitated a course on career choice. I had barely completed my introduction when the children took turns to tell me what their career aspirations were. I allowed the flow.

Uncle Rey? Yes David, I want to be a doctor. Others followed thus: I want to be a lawyer. I want to be a pastor etc. Suddenly, there was a sound of displeasure when a child said I want to be a farmer. I had to wade in.

No course of study is irrelevant! Did you catch that? I say again, no course of study is irrelevant.

No nation would let a course into its educational curriculum across all tiers except it has a need to meet. With recent happenings in our country Nigeria, several courses are relegated and those who study such are regarded as “never do well”. This is wrong! System failure could make the course seem obsolete but those who study it for passion have their reasons. That said, it is high time we properly guide our children to make a career choice not for the satisfaction of a parent or guardian’s selfish interest, but for the fulfilment of the children’s dream.

As a parent or guardian, carefully study your ward. Know what their interests are and guide them in that line. Gone are the days where children are coerced out of personal prejudice to take up a course of study they don’t have interest in.

Years ago, several parents punished and dealt high-mindedly with their children who had flare for football, music etc. but today some of those parents regret such decisions. The social media was agog with comments when Neymar Jnr. switched allegiance from Barcelona FC. to PSG.

I followed the story meticulously. Suffice to say that a good number of persons doled out blames on their parents for not letting them pursue their football dreams.

As a parent or guardian, there is nothing more rewarding than having your children live out their dreams. Such children will forever be grateful and their hearts will always bless you. For me, one of the joy I will have as a father will be to see my children thrive within the confines of their chosen course of study. My mind is made up for this, I don’t know about you?
